Abstract

The article deals with the issues of formation of university students’ foreign language
grammatical competence. The terms "competency" and "competence" are
considered. Also grammar competence as well as stages, means and exercises of its
formation are given a deep thought to. It is mentioned that communicative
competence consists of linguistic (phonetics, vocabulary and grammar), social,
professional, and other competencies as its components. The article mainly focuses
on such means of formation university students’ foreign language grammatical
competence as Quizlet online service. Quizlet platform presents the study material in
the form of interactive flashcards. It offers different activities such as playing,
matching, writing, spelling and so on. The system generates tests and games,
providing assessment and evaluation. The results of practical use of this mobile
application in English classroom demonstrates students' raised motivation to studying
grammar. They are engaged in educational interactive games and thus improve their
linguistic competence. Quizlet increases the efficiency of teaching, by possessing a
vast database, tracking students’ progress, enabling differentiated instruction.
