Using Eco-maps to understand the strengths and resources of a family affected by an emergency
Abstract
The authors turn to a new issue for Ukrainian science space: using Eco-maps to
understand the strengths and resources of a family affected by an emergency. An
interpretation of the meaning of the terms: «Eco-maps», «family strengths» is
provided. The essence and purpose of Eco-maps as a practical tool for analyzing the
strengths of the affected family is revealed in detail. Specific examples of the use of
Eco-maps in crisis and emergency situations and the steps of its creation are
determined. Suggestions are made for optimizing the process of creating and using
Eco-maps to achieve maximum efficiency and benefit for families affected by
emergency situations. Attention is focused on increasing the level of awareness
among specialists and the public regarding the importance of analyzing and
supporting families affected by emergency situations, in particular with the help of
Eco-maps.
Eco-maps are a practical tool of socio-pedagogical work that allows visualizing the
support system of families and identifying key resources and connections in their
environment. This method arose in the context of the systems theory and the
ecological model, which defines the family as part of a wider ecological system.
Participants in the process create a visual representation of the family system,
including family members, family and friendships, and the resources and services
available to the family – this can be done through the use of charts, graphs, or another
visual tool. The use of Eco-maps in Ukraine by researchers can help identify the
strengths and resources of families in emergency situations, identify their needs and
contribute to the development of individualized support plans, in the future it will help
to improve the quality of life of affected families and contribute to their rapid recovery
after crisis situations.
