Abstract

On the basis of the analysis of the Concept of the New
Ukrainian School, updated programs and textbooks on
history for the 5th grade of secondary educational
institutions, the article outlines the conceptual
framework for teaching history in Ukrainian schools.
The problem of implementation of the competent
approach is taken into consideration. It is emphasized
that the new standard of basic secondary education is
planned to be developed by 2019, and establishment
of basic secondary education is scheduled for 2022.
However, the problem of the principles of teaching
history as the main subject of the basic school is
relevant even today. Selected definitions of concepts
«competence», «key competences» are presented.
Competence is considered as the ability of a pupil to
carry out practical activities and solve life problems
independently, which is based on acquired academic
and life experience, personal values and abilities; key
competences is a general content of educational
standards and the way of development of such
personal qualities, which enable to participate
effectively in many social and life spheres. One of the
key competences is social and civil one. Its formation
envisages creation of such conditions in which the
student will learn how to participate effectively and
constructively in public life, resolve conflicts and always
achieve reasonable compromises. New textbooks of
the propaedeutic course of history, upon which pupils
have to study in the 2018-2019 academic year, are
analyzed. The competence-based potential of such
textbooks is determined. Further prospects of research
are outlined.
