Abstract

The place and the role of the geographic
maps in the school geography course are
defined in the article. The formation of
knowledge as for understanding of the
geographical map should be aimed at the
mastering of the main properties of the map:
spatial-temporal similarity, content
conformance, abstraction, selectivity,
unambiguousness, syntheticity, etc. The
ability to read the map and to obtain as
much information as possible is not formed
in pupils at one lesson. The ability of to use
maps correctly allows them to conduct
imaginary journeys, which leads to the
development of the creative memory,
logical thinking, and the formation of the
holistic spatial image of the elements of the
geographical environment. The system of
the preparation of the teachers in the
sphere of the cartography should be based
on the fact that the map is not only the
illustrative material in the teaching of
geography, but also the most important
means of the studying of the
interconnections of the natural and the
economic complexes; without the
consideration and the comprehension of
which in the modern conditions the
functioning of the production is impossible.
Therefore, it is necessary to create the new
view at the geographic map which is based
on the cartographic erudition and the
teacher’s slogan: a pupil without knowledge
of the geographic map is a pupil without
knowledge of the waypoint of life.
