Social network as platforms for informal learning of students of the educational program «Сomputer technologies» in Ukraine and Germany

Abstract

The article examines social networks as a tool for informal education of higher education students enrolled in the Computer Technologies educational program in Ukraine and Germany. The main trends in the use of social media for informal learning within the Computer Technologies programme in both countries are explored. The advantages of informal learning through social media – interactivity, openness, opportunities for self-education, and experience exchange – are identified. A comparative analysis of leading social networks for informal learning of future computer technology specialists in Ukraine (CodeUA; Programming in Ukrainian; IT Ukraine (@ITUkraineNow); Ukrainian Digital Community; Highload.tech and Germany (Meetup; Telegram; YouTube; German Tech Careers Network; GDG Munich; the native web GmbH) has been conducted. These platforms combine video tutorials, thematic discussions, mentoring, and practical cases, promoting self-directed learning, communication, and collaboration. The comparative analysis revealed common features (open access to content, community participation, interactivity, and cross-platform learning) and differences: in Germany, learning tends to be self-directed and career-oriented, while in Ukraine, it is characterised by collaborative and volunteer formats that have evolved in the context of digital transformation and wartime challenges. Based on the conducted analysis, eleven key social affordances of social networks as platforms for informal learning environments have been identified: interaction, engagement, information sharing, publication, participation, discussion, connection, networking, communication, collaboration, and community building.
